Two men accused of murdering former two-time world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete are set to return to the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court as their formal bail application continues.
The accused are 22-year-old Uzuzole Goqwana, who the State alleges is the mastermind behind the killing, and Sinebhongo Qase, who is accused of acting as an intermediary who allegedly recruited the two men accused of carrying out the shooting.
The pair appeared in court on Tuesday, where their bail applications were heard. The State is opposing bail, arguing that the murder was premeditated and falls under Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
Goqwana has denied responsibility for Tete’s death. In an affidavit read in court, he alleged that the boxer had threatened him with a firearm following a dispute involving Tete’s estranged wife. The claims form part of his version before the court and have not been proven.
Tete, 38, was shot dead outside his home in NU17, Mdantsane, on 21 August. A 27-year-old woman who was in the vehicle with him was also shot and wounded.
Two other accused, Siphesihle Kolisa and Athandwa Gangala, who are alleged to be the hitmen, have abandoned their bail applications and remain in custody.
