Spain are the kings of world football once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic extra-time FIFA World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
La Roja claimed their second World Cup title, and their first since their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010, thanks to a decisive strike from Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.
The winning goal came after Nico Williams rose highest to head the ball into Torres’ path, with the Spanish forward making no mistake as he fired home to spark wild celebrations among the Spanish supporters.
Despite facing the defending champions, Spain controlled the contest from start to finish. Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated possession, dictated the tempo and created a host of chances, finishing with an astonishing 20 shots compared to Argentina’s two. Spain registered 12 shots on target, while Argentina failed to test the Spanish goalkeeper even once.
Spain’s triumph capped one of the most dominant World Cup campaigns in history. They conceded just one goal throughout the tournament and recorded seven clean sheets—a new FIFA World Cup record for the most shutouts in a single edition.
The victory also marked a historic milestone for head coach Luis de la Fuente, who became the oldest manager to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy at the age of 65.
