Orlando Pirates defender Thapelo Xoki says the Buccaneers are taking a game-by-game approach as they prepare for a demanding eight-day stretch that includes their CAF Champions League assignment, a Carling Knockout Cup clash and the highly anticipated Soweto Derby.
Pirates will host African Stars on Friday, looking to protect their 1-0 advantage from the first leg and secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.
With three matches scheduled in eight days, the Buccaneers face a demanding test of their squad depth, fitness and ability to maintain consistency across competitions.
However, Xoki insists the immediate priority is overcoming African Stars before shifting focus to their domestic commitments.
The Soweto giants will face Milford in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday before renewing their rivalry with their Soweto neighbours in next Saturday’s derby.
Xoki said the team was determined to complete the job against African Stars, stressing that qualification for the continental competition remained the primary objective.
Despite holding a narrow advantage, the Pirates defender warned against complacency, highlighting the need for the team to maintain its energy, intensity and concentration at home.
The Buccaneers are also drawing lessons from last season’s disappointment, with Xoki indicating that the team is eager to avoid a repeat of that experience.
