The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has called for a full investigation into the pre-match scuffle at the Soweto Derby, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable.
In a statement released this week, SAFPU described the scenes as “regrettable and unacceptable,” warning that such incidents damage the image of South African football and put players at risk.
“The South African Football Players Union notes with grave concern the events that unfolded prior to the recent Soweto derby,” the union said.
“Incidents of this nature are not only embarrassing to the image of South African football, but they also risk compromising the safety and well-being of players.”
SAFPU stressed that all stakeholders, including clubs, match officials, security personnel and governing bodies — must treat the matter with urgency.
“The safety of players is not negotiable; it is foundational,” the statement added.
The union also highlighted the importance of the Soweto Derby as one of Africa’s most iconic fixtures, cautioning that its legacy must not be undermined by avoidable incidents.
