Banyana Banyana booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in a crucial Group B encounter at Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
The defending African champions secured all three points thanks to a decisive goal from Thembi Kgatlana, who found the back of the net in the 21st minute.
Kgatlana’s strike proved to be the difference as South Africa produced a disciplined defensive display to preserve their lead and keep their title defence on track.
The victory sees Banyana Banyana advance to the knockout stages, where they will face tournament hosts Morocco in a blockbuster quarter-final.
Head coach Desiree Ellis’ side showed composure and resilience throughout the contest, limiting Burkina Faso’s opportunities while creating enough chances to secure the win.
