Relief efforts underway after deadly winds hit Ngwetsheni village

Following a devastating incident caused by strong winds that claimed the lives of Lihle Meyato (29) and Qhamani Langa (35) at Ngwetsheni Village in KwaBhaca on the afternoon of 5 April 2026, the Umzimvubu Local Municipality has intensified its response to assist affected residents.

Municipal Manager Thobela Nata confirmed that the municipality, working closely with key stakeholders such as the Department of Human Settlements and the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, has already provided immediate relief to all affected households. This coordinated response has ensured that displaced families receive essential support during this difficult time.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has begun assessments and is distributing critical relief items, including vouchers, mattresses, and school uniforms to those impacted. In addition, the Department of Human Settlements conducted verification processes from 9 to 10 April 2026 to assess households in need of shelter assistance. Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers has also been brought on board and will conduct its own verification to further support affected families.

On Friday, 10 April 2026, the municipality joined a community prayer session organised by Traditional Leaders alongside local churches to offer comfort to grieving families. A second multisectoral prayer gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, 14 April 2026, at Ngwetsheni Village.

“Our hearts are with all those affected by this tragic incident. The Municipality remains fully committed to supporting residents during this difficult period, ensuring that both immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts are carried out in a coordinated and compassionate manner. We extend our deepest condolences to the Meyato and Langa families as they navigate this profound loss. We also commend the community for its unity and resilience during this painful time,” said Municipal Manager Thobela Nata.

Funeral services for the late Lihle Meyato and Qhamani Langa are scheduled to take place on 17 and 18 April 2026 at Ngwetsheni Village.

Meanwhile, electricity supply disruptions continue to affect parts of the community due to extensive damage to medium- and low-voltage infrastructure. Eskom has indicated that power is expected to be fully restored between Sunday evening and Monday morning. Residents are urged to remain patient as repair teams work on the ground to restore electricity safely and as quickly as possible.
