Two Eswatini nationals have been arrested, and more than 375kg of dagga worth approximately R1.9 million has been seized in two separate police operations in Mpumalanga.
The first operation was conducted near the Oshoek Port of Entry on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, where Hartebeeskop police stopped a Toyota Fortuner bearing Eswatini registration plates.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 272.65kg of dagga valued at approximately R1.1 million. Police also confiscated a 9mm pistol, a magazine and 13 rounds of ammunition.
The two men, aged 26 and 38, were arrested and face charges of dealing in dagga, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act. They are expected to appear in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court.
In a separate incident on Monday, 19 October, the SAPS Secunda Flying Squad recovered 103kg of dagga worth an estimated R800,000 from a light-blue Honda Civic on the N17 near Leandra.
The driver allegedly fled on foot when police attempted to stop the vehicle. The dagga was found on the rear passenger seat and inside the boot. Both the vehicle and the drugs were seized, while the driver remained at large.
Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise praised the police officers for their efforts, reiterating that law enforcement would continue targeting drug trafficking and illegal activities at the province’s ports of entry.
