Carrim’s health scare threatens to stall key evidence at Madlanga Commission

Controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim is unlikely to appear before the Madlanga Commission on Thursday after reportedly being admitted to a medical facility, raising uncertainty over testimony that could shed further light on alleged corruption linked to a multimillion-rand SAPS tender.

Carrim was expected to testify before the commission, which is investigating allegations of corruption, tender fraud and the influence of underworld figures within law enforcement structures.

Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that the commission would consider Carrim’s health condition when proceedings resume.

“The last time Mr Carrim was meant to appear before the commission, he couldn’t due to ill health. It seems his condition persists. As far as tomorrow’s proceedings are concerned, we will deal with Mr Carrim’s matter tomorrow morning,” said Michaels.

Carrim has come under intense scrutiny over financial transactions involving Medicare24, a company linked to alleged tender fraud accused Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

Evidence before the commission revealed that while Carrim had disclosed a R10 million loan to Medicare24 in June 2024, an additional R2.1 million was allegedly transferred to the company through another of his businesses, Tasmica Construction.

The commission is probing why the additional payments were not disclosed and whether the transactions were linked to the controversial R360 million South African Police Service tender that has become a central focus of the inquiry.

The Madlanga Commission is expected to decide on the way forward when proceedings resume on Thursday morning.
