Woman defends herself, stabs suspected rapist in Eastern Cape attack

Police in Mtontsasa, Eastern Cape, have arrested a 35-year-old man from Hlabathi following a violent rape incident in which the victim fought back and managed to escape.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening, 12 April 2026, when a 20-year-old woman was walking to visit her boyfriend in the Gqibelana area. According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the suspect allegedly confronted the woman with an Okapi knife, demanded sex, and proceeded to rape her.

During the attack, the woman reportedly pretended to cooperate in order to survive. When the suspect dropped the knife, she seized the opportunity, grabbed the weapon, and stabbed him twice in the neck, forcing him to flee the scene.

Police say the investigation led officers to a nearby hospital after receiving information linking a man with stab wounds to the crime. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning, 14 April, while receiving treatment. He was found with two stab wounds to the neck, and bloodstained clothing was later recovered hidden under a bed in his room. The knife used in the attack was also recovered.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
