Umzimvubu rolls out AARTO to tighten traffic law enforcement

The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has started implementing the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) system, which came into effect in the municipality on 1 July 2026.

The system is aimed at improving traffic fine collection, encouraging compliance with road rules and improving road safety through a demerit points system.

The municipality is rolling out awareness campaigns through various media platforms, communities and taxi ranks to educate motorists about AARTO.

Mayor Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu welcomed the rollout, urging motorists to cooperate with authorities.

“The Municipality can report that it has started with the implementation of AARTO and urges members of the public, especially motorists, to cooperate and take advantage of all the opportunities that the system brings,” said Ndevu.

Transport associations in the municipality have also been engaged and have welcomed the system.

The municipality says awareness campaigns will continue as it works to ensure motorists understand the new traffic enforcement system.
