A 28-year-old man from Sesalong village has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for raping a 95-year-old woman.
The Polokwane High Court sentenced him to 20 years for rape and eight years for housebreaking with intent to rape, with the sentences running concurrently.
The court heard that the man entered the elderly woman’s home on 4 October 2025 while looking for a friend. After finding her alone, he allegedly overpowered and raped her twice before fleeing.
He was arrested the following day after community members apprehended him. DNA evidence later linked him to the crime.
The accused pleaded guilty and was also ordered to be placed on the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The NPA welcomed the sentence, with Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Ivy Thenga saying it reaffirmed the prosecution’s commitment to protecting vulnerable victims of gender-based violence.
