A long-standing water crisis in two Ntabankulu villages could soon ease as a R3.997 million infrastructure project gets underway.
The Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM) has handed over the Luncedweni Water Supply Scheme to Route 17 CVE Trading and Projects, which will undertake the construction work in partnership with Lebutaka Consulting Engineers, marking the start of construction aimed at improving water access in Luncedweni and Dedelo.
About 70 households are expected to benefit from the project, which is being funded through the Water Services Infrastructure Grant.
The four-month project will focus on strengthening existing water sources, including a spring and borehole, while extending the water network by approximately five kilometres.
Communal standpipes will also be installed to bring water points closer to residents who have struggled with limited and unreliable access.
Beyond water provision, the project is expected to create about 15 jobs and open opportunities for local businesses through subcontracting and related work.
ANDM Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo said improving water infrastructure remains a priority, particularly in rural communities.
She said the project would bring clean and dependable water closer to households and improve service delivery in the area.
Residents have welcomed the development and urged authorities to ensure the work is completed within the agreed four-month period.
The municipality said it would monitor the construction closely to ensure the project stays on schedule and delivers infrastructure that meets the required standards.
