The Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) has issued a warning to coastal communities following reports of dead sardines found along the coastline stretching from Francis Bay to Mbizana.
According to the department, the fish deaths are linked to Pilchard Herpes Virus (PHV), which has been identified as a possible cause of the sardine mortalities. Communities in the affected areas are urged not to consume, handle or collect the dead fish for food, due to the potential risk of food poisoning and associated health hazards.
Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of dead fish to the relevant authorities. Municipalities have also been advised to safely collect and bury the fish to prevent them from being consumed or posing a risk to public health and the environment.
DEDEAT says further information will be provided as investigations continue. Communities are urged to follow official guidance and avoid consuming any dead or stranded fish found along the affected coastline.
