The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has rejected claims that political parties or independent candidates were given additional time to submit candidates for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The IEC said the official deadline for candidate submissions was 28 August 2026 at 17h00, and no political party or independent candidate was granted an extension beyond that deadline.
The Commission said its Online Candidate Nomination System remained available throughout the official nomination period, which opened on 7 August 2026.
The clarification follows comments by the African National Congress (ANC) regarding the submission of candidates ahead of the local government polls.
The IEC is expected to provide further details during a media briefing on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, at Election House in Centurion.
The Commission said it remains committed to ensuring a transparent candidate nomination process and protecting the integrity and credibility of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
