The Madlanga Commission is taking a short break from public hearings as it enters the final stretch of its investigation into alleged criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
The Judicial Commission of Inquiry will adjourn from Thursday, 3 September, with public hearings set to resume on Monday, 14 September 2026.
The commission’s final public hearing for this week is expected to take place on Wednesday, 2 September.
The temporary recess comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa granted the commission an extension to complete its work. The inquiry is now expected to submit its final report to the President by 16 November 2026, rather than the previous end-of-August deadline.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said the break was required to accommodate prior commitments by two commissioners.
He said the commission’s senior officials and extended team would remain hard at work during the recess, preparing for the next phase of hearings.
The commission was established following allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on 6 July 2025.
Mkhwanazi’s allegations triggered a wide-ranging investigation into claims of criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.
The inquiry has already submitted two interim reports to Ramaphosa as it works towards completing its final report.
