Defending champions Banyana Banyana suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in their opening match of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco, on Monday evening.
South Africa entered the tournament as one of the favourites to retain the continental title but endured a disappointing start after failing to make the most of their dominance in possession and scoring opportunities.
Tanzania produced a disciplined performance and capitalised on their chances to secure a memorable victory over the reigning African champions.
Banyana Banyana created several promising attacks throughout the match but lacked the clinical finishing needed to convert their superiority into goals. Tanzania, meanwhile, remained compact defensively and punished South Africa’s mistakes to claim all three points.
