The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the province’s roads as severe winter weather continues to create hazardous driving conditions across several areas.
Persistent rainfall has left many roads wet and slippery, while poor visibility caused by mist and heavy weather has increased the risk of road crashes. Authorities are appealing to all road users to adjust their driving habits to suit the challenging conditions.
Motorists are advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, switch on their headlights and avoid sudden braking or overtaking when visibility is poor.
The Department has also warned that winter brings additional risks, including late sunrises, early sunsets, possible snowfall in high-lying areas and the formation of black ice on roads. These conditions can make travel particularly dangerous during the early morning and evening hours.
To improve safety, motorists are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy by checking tyres, brakes and windscreen wipers before travelling. The Department also advises against unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather and urges road users to obey all road closure notices and instructions issued by traffic authorities.
Traffic law enforcement officers and road maintenance teams remain on high alert and are closely monitoring conditions across the provincial road network to respond to weather-related incidents.
The Department has reiterated that the safety of all road users remains its highest priority and has called on motorists to drive responsibly, remain vigilant and take every precaution while the severe winter weather persists.
