NPA withdraws corruption charges against Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo and co-accused

The National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, has directed that corruption charges against South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and his seven co-accused be withdrawn before they could enter a plea in court.

Khumalo and the other accused had been facing charges including corruption, fraud, theft, unlawful interception of communications, unlawful acquisition and possession of intelligence equipment, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, and contraventions of the Intelligence Services Act and the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA).

The charges stemmed from allegations that the accused were involved in the irregular procurement and misuse of intelligence-gathering equipment, the unlawful interception of communications, and the misappropriation of Crime Intelligence funds.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the charges were withdrawn on the instruction of Advocate Andy Mothibi before plea proceedings commenced.
