Four men have been arrested in connection with a brutal mass shooting that left four people dead and two others wounded in Govan Mbeki, KwaDwesi, earlier this month.
The arrests were made by the South African Police Service’s Eastern Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit on Friday, 19 June 2026, following a breakthrough in the investigation into the deadly attack.
The shooting occurred on 6 June 2026 at about 20:40 when several armed men allegedly stormed a house in Mti Street, Govan Mbeki, and opened fire on the occupants.
Four people were killed in the attack, including a 41-year-old man and three women aged 36, 41 and 26. Two other women, aged 39 and 50, sustained gunshot wounds and survived the ordeal.
According to police, the suspects were wearing masks when they entered the house. After carrying out the shooting, they allegedly took the victims’ cellphones before fleeing the scene.
Police opened four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, with the Provincial Serious Violent Crime Unit taking over the investigation.
Following intensive investigations, detectives arrested four male suspects aged between 20 and 34. The accused made a brief appearance in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on 22 June 2026, where they faced charges of murder and attempted murder.
The matter was postponed to 29 June 2026 for formal bail applications.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo welcomed the arrests, describing them as a significant breakthrough in a case that shocked the community.
“The arrest of these four suspects is a significant breakthrough in a case that claimed the lives of four people and left two others injured,” said Ngalo.
“I commend the dedicated members of the Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit for their relentless efforts, professionalism, and commitment in bringing those responsible before the courts.”
