As South Africans continue to follow the proceedings of high-profile commissions and inquiries, the role of commissioners in shaping the direction of proceedings often comes under public scrutiny. One such figure attracting attention is Commissioner Sandile Khumalo, who is currently seating at the Madlanga Commission, whose extensive legal and academic background has sparked interest in legal and public circles. According to information published by Crime Connect, Khumalo’s journey to becoming a commissioner is underpinned by decades of academic achievement, legal practice, and specialist expertise.
Khumalo completed his matric at Barnato Park High School before pursuing a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the former Rand Afrikaans University, now known as the University of Johannesburg. He further strengthened his qualifications by obtaining a Diploma in Corporate Law and a Diploma in Advanced Banking. His academic journey later took him to the Netherlands, where he completed a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Business Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He graduated with distinction (cum laude), an achievement that placed him among the institution’s top-performing students.
After returning to South Africa, Khumalo was admitted as an Advocate in 2002 and joined Duma Nokwe Advocates in Sandton. Early in his legal career, he received the African Advocate Award, which included an 18-week placement at 18 Red Lion Chambers in London. There, he worked alongside King’s Counsel and members of the British judiciary, gaining international legal exposure. Rather than pursuing a career focused on high-profile criminal litigation, Khumalo developed a niche practice in pensions, retirement funds and employee benefits law. Over the years, he became recognised as a specialist in the field, advising on matters involving significant financial and governance interests.
His professional experience extends beyond legal practice. Khumalo has served as a trustee of several pension and retirement funds, including those associated with Alexander Forbes. He has also shared his expertise through part-time lecturing in pension law and has served as an acting judge, authoring judgments in court proceedings. Observers note that his combination of academic excellence, specialist legal knowledge and judicial experience contributes to the approach he brings to commission proceedings and witness examinations. As commissioners continue to play a critical role in advancing accountability and uncovering facts in matters of public interest, Khumalo’s career reflects the
