South Africans urged to register ahead of local government elections

South Africans are being encouraged to take part in the national voter registration weekend on 20 and 21 June ahead of the Local Government Elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.

The Electoral Commission will open nearly 24,000 registration stations across the country’s 4,488 municipal wards, allowing eligible citizens to register, update their details and confirm their voting districts.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said preparations are well underway, while the Department of Home Affairs will keep offices open to assist citizens needing identity documents for registration.

The voter registration drive forms part of the Commission’s “Get Up, Show Up, Vote” campaign, which aims to boost participation, particularly among young people.

Currently, 27.9 million South Africans are registered to vote, exceeding figures recorded ahead of the 2024 general elections. More than 376,000 new registrations have been recorded between January and May this year.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa expressed confidence that youth participation will continue to grow ahead of the elections.

Eligible voters can register online or visit their designated voting stations during the registration weekend.
