Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has criticised FIFA’s decision to hand midfielder Themba Zwane a three-match suspension following his red card in South Africa’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Mexico.
Zwane was sent off after being judged to have illegally raised his arm on a Mexican defender during Bafana’s 2-0 defeat. The suspension means the veteran midfielder will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A matches against Czechia and South Korea, although the decision remains subject to appeal.
The ban comes as Bafana Bafana prepare for a crucial must-win encounter against Czechia tonight. After losing their opening match, South Africa need a positive result to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Broos said he believes the punishment is far too harsh.
“First of all, I think that the red card is too severe. I saw the situation where Themba got the red card, I don’t think it was a red card,” said Broos.
The Belgian tactician also questioned FIFA’s consistency, pointing to an incident involving Lionel Messi during Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria.
“When I saw what happened with Messi yesterday, I don’t agree, certainly not. I think there was not even a VAR with Messi,” Broos added.
With Zwane ruled out, Bafana Bafana face an even tougher challenge as they look to secure a vital victory against Czechia and revive their World Cup campaign.
