SARB launches new R2 commemorative coin honouring 1976 Soweto youth uprising

The South African Reserve Bank (South African Reserve Bank) has unveiled a new R2 commemorative circulation coin to honour the legacy of the June 1976 Youth Uprising in Soweto.

The coin was officially launched at the Hector Pieterson Museum in Orlando West, Johannesburg, a site dedicated to preserving the memory of the 1976 student protests that became a turning point in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.
President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled the commemorative coin on Tuesday as part of events marking 50 years since thousands of Soweto learners marched against the apartheid government’s education policies, particularly the enforced use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction and the inequalities of the Bantu Education system.

The new R2 coin features an image of learners raising their fists in defiance during the 1976 protests. The raised fist serves as a powerful symbol of resistance, unity and the courage displayed by young South Africans who stood up against oppression.

According to the Reserve Bank, the coin’s design draws inspiration from the historic events of June 1976 and embodies themes of remembrance, resistance and hope.

Visitors attending commemorative events at the Hector Pieterson Memorial were given an opportunity to exchange ordinary R2 coins for the special commemorative edition.

The SARB emphasized that while the coin carries historical significance, it remains legal tender and retains the same value as any other R2 coin in circulation.

“Although the commemorative coin is special, it carries the same value as ordinary R2 coins in circulation. Commemorative circulation coins serve as a tool for national storytelling because, as they move through communities, people can share these stories in their homes, at malls, taxi ranks and wherever money is used daily,” the Reserve Bank said.
