A 45-year-old Zimbabwean national has been arrested after police allegedly discovered tobacco worth about R3.8 million hidden inside an LP gas tanker at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.
SAPS Border Policing officers stopped the Volvo truck on Monday, 24 August, as it entered South Africa.
The driver allegedly told officers the tanker was carrying gas. A search uncovered a concealed hatch beneath the trailer, where police found 521 plastic bags containing about 7,294kg of suspected manufactured tobacco.
The truck and tanker, valued at approximately R1.8 million, were also seized.
The accused appeared in the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 26 August. He remains in custody, with the case postponed to 31 August for a formal bail application.
Investigations are continuing to establish the origin and intended destination of the tobacco and whether other suspects are involved.
