A wanted illegal mining kingpin has been shot dead during an intelligence-driven operation by the National Intervention Unit (NIU) in Carletonville, Gauteng.
The operation was carried out on Sunday as part of ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to dismantle illegal mining syndicates and curb violent criminal activities linked to illegal mining in the area.
According to police, NIU members traced the suspect to a residence where he was believed to be staying.
Upon arrival, officers announced their presence and identified themselves as police.
Police allege that the suspect responded by pointing an AK-47 assault rifle at the officers.
“Members were compelled to respond with force, resulting in the suspect sustaining fatal gunshot wounds,” SAPS said.
The suspect was declared dead at the scene.
An AK-47 rifle and 125 rounds of ammunition were seized during the operation.
Police said the deceased was known as one of the dangerous illegal mining kingpins operating in the Carletonville area and was allegedly involved in the ongoing conflict between two rival illegal mining groups.
The operation forms part of intensified SAPS efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in illegal mining and disrupt the violence associated with the illicit activities.
SAPS said it would continue conducting intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining syndicates and restoring law and order in communities affected by illegal mining and related violence.
