A 37-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, on Monday, 31 August 2026, in connection with an alleged R635 million fraud case involving Tembisa Hospital.
The suspect was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit and faces charges of fraud, corruption, forgery and/or uttering, contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and money laundering.
According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), the arrest follows a complex investigation into alleged multimillion-rand tender fraud linked to the hospital’s procurement processes.
“It is alleged that certain officials at the hospital colluded with service providers to exploit the Request for Quotations (RFQ) system for procurement transactions below the R500,000 threshold. This approach was intentionally employed to circumvent the formal tender process,” the DPCI said.
The investigation forms part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies to uncover alleged corruption and financial misconduct involving public funds at the hospital.
The case also follows revelations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) last year that its investigation into Tembisa Hospital had uncovered three coordinated syndicates allegedly responsible for the looting of more than R2 billion intended for healthcare.
