Sandiso Matyhida, 30, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his 26-year-old girlfriend with an axe at Bheseti Farm in Cacadu.
The Mthatha High Court sentenced Matyhida on 27 October 2026. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The incident occurred on 27 January 2026 at about 20:30 at Matyhida’s home at Bheseti Farm, where he allegedly hacked his girlfriend, who was from Authay, to death with an axe.
Police said the victim was found dead and Matyhida confessed to the murder. He was arrested at the scene.
The case was transferred from the Cofimvaba Magistrate’s Court to the Mthatha High Court. His bail was successfully opposed, and he remained in custody throughout the trial.
Eastern Cape District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph welcomed the life imprisonment sentence, describing it as a significant outcome in the fight against gender-based violence.
