SAPS investigates apparent murder-suicide involving two police officers in Gqeberha

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a tragic murder-suicide involving two police officers in Parsonsvlei, Gqeberha.

According to SAPS, a 44-year-old sergeant allegedly shot and killed his 34-year-old wife, who was also a police sergeant, before turning the gun on himself during an altercation at their home shortly after midnight on Saturday, 18 July.

The deceased woman was stationed at Mount Road SAPS, while her husband was attached to New Brighton SAPS. Both were declared dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

Police recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy are ongoing.

SAPS said two minors were inside the house at the time of the shooting. The organisation’s Employee Health and Wellness Programme has been activated to provide counselling and support to the children, affected family members and colleagues.

The police service condemned the incident and urged members experiencing emotional or mental health challenges to seek professional help before situations escalate into violence.
