The Senegalese Football Federation has sensationally dismissed national team coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions’ exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the decision was taken “in the best interests of Senegalese football.”
Thiaw was relieved of his duties overnight between Sunday and Monday, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure that began in December 2024.
The decision comes just days after Senegal’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32. Senegal had reached the knockout stage in style, thrashing Iraq 5-0 in their final group match, but were unable to progress further.
The 44-year-old coach also leaves under the shadow of controversy. During last year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Senegal was stripped of its title after players briefly walked off the pitch on Thiaw’s instructions, sparking widespread criticism.
The federation has not yet announced who will take charge of the national team.
