SANDF dismisses claims of planned deployment ahead of June protests

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has denied reports circulating on social media that it plans to deploy soldiers ahead of planned protest action scheduled for 30 June 2026.

In a statement, the SANDF described the claims as false, unfounded and deliberately misleading, stressing that no directive has been issued and no preparations have been made for any deployment related to the planned marches.

The protests, organised by various civil society groups, are expected to call for the repatriation of illegal foreign nationals. However, the SANDF emphasised that it has not been involved in any planning or operations linked to the demonstrations.

“The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has noted with concern misleading reports on social media suggesting that the SANDF will be deployed in anticipation of planned marches and protest action on 30 June 2026,” the statement said.

“At no stage has the SANDF issued any directive or made preparations for deployment in relation to these activities. The SANDF appreciates that the Constitution of the Republic allows peaceful protest marches.”

The military further cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified information, warning that such claims can create unnecessary panic and undermine public trust.

“The SANDF distances itself entirely from these claims and cautions against the dissemination of unverified information that undermines public trust and creates unnecessary alarm,” the statement added.

The clarification comes after the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster last week confirmed that citizens have a constitutional right to participate in peaceful demonstrations, while urging organisers and leaders to ensure that such marches are conducted responsibly and within the confines of the law.

The SANDF reiterated that it remains committed to operating strictly within its constitutional mandate.
