Two arrested for the rape of a seven-year-old girl

A seven-year-old girl’s recovery from a life-threatening illness has led to the arrest of two people accused of sexually abusing her, Eastern Cape police have confirmed.

The child was admitted to the Paediatric Oncology Ward at a provincial hospital in Gqeberha on 14 January 2026, where she was receiving treatment for a severe medical condition. During her stay in hospital, medical staff uncovered evidence suggesting that she had been sexually abused.

The case was subsequently assigned to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Humansdorp, which launched an investigation.

As the young victim’s health improved, she was able to disclose details of the abuse she had allegedly endured. Information gathered during the investigation pointed to individuals close to the child as the alleged perpetrators.

The breakthrough led to the arrest of a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. Both have been charged with rape and are expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 1 June 2026.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the case as deeply disturbing, saying the child had been failed by those who were supposed to care for her.

“This is heartbreaking. A child fighting a critical condition was betrayed by the very people meant to protect her. I commend the medical team and our FCS Unit for their swift action. We will pursue every perpetrator of crimes against women and children until justice is served,” he said.

Police have praised the collaboration between healthcare workers and investigators, which ultimately helped uncover the alleged abuse and bring the suspects before the courts.
