IEC reports smooth start to special voting despite two incidents

Special voting for the 2026 Local Government Elections started on a positive note on Monday, with nearly 99% of voting stations opening on time at 8am, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Commissioner Masego Shiburi said voters were being assisted smoothly at most stations, although delays were reported in Cape Town, where only 10 of 116 wards had opened by 10:30am.

The Commission also reported two serious incidents involving election officials. A Deputy Presiding Officer was hit by a vehicle while travelling to a voting station in uKhahlamba and taken to hospital, while a Presiding Officer in the North West collapsed and died while on duty.

The IEC said it was supporting the affected officials and their families.

Special voting continues until 5pm on Monday and Tuesday. Approved voters must cast their ballots at their registered voting stations and present a valid South African identity document.
