The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has urged voters, political parties and other stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and orderly Election Day as South Africans prepare to vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 4 November.
IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya made the appeal on Tuesday, confirming that the Commission was ready to oversee the elections across all nine provinces.
The IEC revealed that 29.2 million voters had registered to cast their ballots at 23 696 voting stations nationwide, with 188 000 election officials deployed to assist with the process.
Moepya said all ballot papers and essential election materials had been secured and distributed to voting stations.
Voting stations will open at 7am and close at 9pm.
The Commission reminded voters that they must vote at the station where they are registered and present a valid South African ID, Smart ID card or Temporary Identity Certificate.
Voters are also prohibited from photographing marked ballot papers, while canvassing, intimidation and attempts to influence voters at voting stations are not allowed. However, wearing party colours is permitted.
Meanwhile, all election campaigning must end at midnight on Tuesday.
The IEC urged the public to verify election-related information through official channels and refrain from spreading misinformation.
“We urge voters, political parties, independent candidates, observers and all stakeholders to uphold the principles of democracy, respect the electoral process and contribute to a peaceful Election Day,” said Moepya.
