South Africans who are eligible to vote but do not yet have valid identity documents are being urged to apply for their IDs ahead of the Local Government Elections scheduled for November.
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says having a valid ID is essential for citizens who want to participate in the democratic process.
“A valid ID holds the key to democratic participation in the upcoming elections,” Schreiber said.
The department says it has expanded access to Smart ID services, with digitalised services now available at more than 450 participating bank branches following a major rollout over the past five months.
Schreiber has encouraged eligible citizens to take advantage of the improved services and apply for their Smart IDs without delay.
Citizens who have already applied for an ID but have not collected it are also being urged to collect their documents as soon as possible.
Those who have lost or damaged their identity documents are encouraged to apply for replacements at Home Affairs offices or participating bank branches rather than waiting until closer to the elections.
The department says citizens can visit the Home Affairs online portal to locate their nearest participating bank branch.
