More than 868,000 applications have been submitted for the 2027 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding cycle, with prospective students having until 31 October 2026 to apply.
NSFAS reported receiving 868,626 applications since the application window opened on 18 September 2026, while warning that the deadline will not be extended.
According to the latest application dashboard, prospective university students account for the majority of submissions, with 800,382 applications. A further 68,244 applications have been received from students planning to enrol at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
Female applicants make up 616,558 of the total, representing 70.98%, while male applicants account for 252,068, or 29.02%.
The figures further indicate that 653,778 applicants are South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries, compared with 214,848 non-SASSA applicants.
NSFAS has urged prospective students who have not yet applied to submit their applications before the closing date through its official website, www.nsfas.org.za, or the official NSFAS mobile application.
The scheme has also reminded applicants to provide accurate information and submit all required supporting documents to avoid potential delays or complications.
In addition, NSFAS has warned students against fraudulent social media accounts and individuals demanding payment in exchange for application assistance or promising guaranteed funding.
“NSFAS applications must be submitted through official platforms, and no one can guarantee a funding outcome,” the scheme said.
Suspected fraud can be reported anonymously to the NSFAS Fraud and Corruption Hotline via speakup@nsfas.org.za.
With the deadline fast approaching, prospective students are encouraged to use official NSFAS communication channels for application guidance and updates.
