The High Court in Johannesburg has granted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) a final forfeiture order for assets worth approximately R326 million linked to the alleged “Maumela syndicate” in the Tembisa Hospital corruption case.
The assets, including luxury properties and high-end vehicles, were previously placed under a preservation order in August 2025.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the investigation stemmed from information provided by slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran, whose report exposed suspected procurement irregularities at Tembisa Hospital.
Forensic investigations found that 14 companies allegedly controlled by the syndicate benefited from irregular hospital contracts worth more than R400 million between 2016 and 2022.
According to the NPA, investigators uncovered manipulated bidding processes, including fake quotations and cover bidding schemes designed to ensure contracts were awarded to companies linked to the syndicate.
