FIFA bans refillable water bottles in world cup stadiums amid safety concerns

FIFA has introduced a revised Stadium Code of Conduct ahead of the World Cup, banning fans from bringing reusable and refillable water bottles into stadiums.

According to the New York Times, the updated rules explicitly state that “reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium,” removing earlier guidance that had allowed empty bottles for spectators. The change means fans will no longer be permitted to enter venues with refillable containers, and will instead need to rely on stadium-provided options.

The New York Times also reported that FIFA has removed a previous provision that permitted empty reusable plastic bottles inside stadiums, tightening the restriction further.

In a statement to AFP, FIFA said the decision was made on safety grounds, noting that several host venues already enforce similar restrictions. The organisation said the policy is intended to protect the health and safety of players, officials, fans, volunteers, and staff, and to reduce potential risks or injuries.

Despite concerns about hydration in potentially hot conditions, FIFA said spectators will still have access to misting stations, cooling fans, hydration points, and shaded cooling areas within stadium environments.
