Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has defended the club’s approach to youth development, saying young players must be introduced to the first team at the right time.
Cardoso said injuries and squad shortages last season forced several academy players into senior roles earlier than planned, highlighting the challenge of balancing development with the club’s ambition to compete for major trophies.
The Portuguese mentor pointed to left-back Thato Sibiya and winger Kutlwano Lethlaku as key prospects for the club’s future. While admitting Sibiya may have been exposed too early in a CAF Champions League match against Al Hilal, Cardoso expressed confidence in the youngster’s long-term potential.
He also praised Lethlaku’s progression through the club’s development structures, describing him as an example of how academy talent can successfully transition to the first team.
Cardoso rejected suggestions that Sundowns neglect their academy, insisting that producing homegrown players strengthens the squad and reduces the need for expensive signings.
