Emergency services responded swiftly to a serious head-on collision on the M4 Northern Freeway near the Broadway off-ramp in Durban North in the early hours of Friday morning.
Paramedics from ALS Paramedics arrived shortly after 5am to find two heavily damaged vehicles blocking the roadway, prompting a large-scale rescue operation. Additional support, including the eThekwini Fire Department, was called in to assist.
A total of four occupants were found across the two vehicles, all with injuries ranging from moderate to critical. Rescue teams worked urgently to free two individuals trapped in one of the vehicles.
Despite efforts to save her, a female passenger believed to be in her twenties succumbed to multiple injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the same vehicle sustained critical injuries and was stabilised before being rushed to hospital.
The two occupants of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and were also transported for further medical treatment.
The crash led to significant disruption, with the roadway closed for an extended period while emergency teams cleared the scene and authorities began their investigation.
