A 42-year-old man, Asanda January, has been sentenced to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his 36-year-old girlfriend in Cofimvaba.
January was sentenced by the Cacadu High Court on 29 October 2026. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The murder took place on 1 October 2025 at Joe Slovo in Cofimvaba, where January assaulted his girlfriend with a wooden stick, resulting in her death.
A murder case was opened at Cofimvaba Police Station and thoroughly investigated. January was arrested, and his bail application was successfully opposed, keeping him behind bars throughout the trial.
Following several court appearances, he was convicted and sentenced to 22 years’ imprisonment.
District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph welcomed the sentence, saying he was pleased with the lengthy prison terms recently imposed on perpetrators of gender-based violence.
