Former deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya has been denied bail by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The 59-year-old is facing charges that include the alleged rape of an 18-year-old woman, human trafficking and the alleged grooming of a 16-year-old girl. He denies the allegations against him.
The State opposed his release, arguing that he could interfere with witnesses, intimidate complainants or evade justice if granted bail. His defence challenged the State’s case and proposed bail of R20,000.
Sibiya has been in custody since his arrest in September. He resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS) on 12 October while disciplinary proceedings against him were under way.
The court’s decision means Sibiya will remain in custody as the criminal proceedings continue. The denial of bail does not constitute a finding of guilt, and the charges against him remain allegations until proven in court.
Sibiya is expected to return to court on 24 November
