Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by Angola’s Wiliete SC in their CAF Champions League encounter at the Estadio Nacional da Tundavala in Lubango, Angola, on Sunday.
The Brazilians struggled to convert their attacking opportunities into goals, with Wiliete putting up a determined defensive display to keep the South African side at bay.
Sundowns came close to breaking the deadlock early in the match when Brayan León’s effort was cleared off the line. However, neither side managed to find the back of the net.
The Tshwane giants also suffered a setback when midfielder Teboho Mokoena was forced off with an injury in the 40th minute and replaced by Bathusi Aubaas.
The result leaves Sundowns needing a stronger performance in the return leg as they look to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday, 23 October, where Sundowns will be aiming to make home advantage count and book their place in the next stage of the competition.
