Former ANC North West treasurer Suliman Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening, shortly before he was due to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The 49-year-old businessman was apprehended by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry’s Recommendations Task Team (CRTT) over his failure to appear before the commission.
Carrim is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday following his arrest.
His arrest comes after the commission opened a criminal case against him in an effort to secure his appearance before the inquiry. His failure to appear has drawn attention to the commission’s efforts to ensure that individuals required to participate in its proceedings comply with its directives.
Carrim has also been implicated in allegations of corruption and questionable dealings involving controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The commission is investigating allegations of corruption, criminality and interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
