New Hankey–Humansdorp road expected to boost Eastern Cape farming economy

Farmers and businesses in the Sarah Baartman District are expected to benefit from improved road access following the completion of the 27.4-kilometre Hankey–Humansdorp Road rehabilitation project.

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha officially opened the rehabilitated and resealed road after 20 months of construction, with the upgrade aimed at improving road safety and facilitating the movement of agricultural produce to markets.

The road serves farming communities in the region, where reliable transport routes are important for connecting producers to markets and supporting local economic activity.

The project also created employment opportunities for local residents and contributed to developing the skills and capacity of local contractors.

Nqatha said investment in road infrastructure had benefits beyond improved travel conditions, including job creation and better access to economic opportunities.

He urged residents to protect the road, reminding them that the project was funded through taxpayers’ money.

The MEC called on the community to take ownership of the infrastructure and ensure it remains in good condition for future generations.
