The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has received 51 474 applications within the first four days of opening its 2027 funding cycle.
NSFAS said the strong early response reflects continued demand for financial assistance among young people seeking access to higher education and training.
Of the applications received, 43 297 were from first-time entering students and prospective applicants, while 6 865 were FET applicants. Female applicants accounted for 74.06% of submissions.
“The majority of applications have been received from young people between the ages of 18 and 29, highlighting the continued demand for financial assistance,” NSFAS said.
The scheme urged prospective applicants to apply early and ensure all required documents are submitted correctly.
“Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible and not wait until the closing stages of the application period,” NSFAS said.
The 2027 application period closes on 31 October 2026, with NSFAS confirming that there will be no extension.
