A 36-year-old Lesotho national has been sentenced to a combined 12 years in prison after being convicted of attempted rape and contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act.
Mosiuwa Michael Matletse was sentenced by the Bloemfontein Regional Court following an incident involving a 16-year-old girl on 28 April 2024.
The court heard that Matletse pursued the teenager while armed with a knife and threatened her. The victim attempted to flee and sought refuge at a nearby house.
Matletse allegedly forced his way into the residence and damaged property while trying to reach the girl.
The homeowner and his son intervened and rescued the victim, resulting in Matletse’s immediate arrest.
The investigation, led by Detective Sergeant Bokamoso Shanice Peter, established that Matletse was a Lesotho citizen who was residing in South Africa unlawfully.
Peter successfully opposed bail and continued with the investigation despite Matletse denying the allegations against him.
The court sentenced Matletse to 10 years’ imprisonment for attempted rape, with a further two years for contravening the Immigration Act.
