The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has recovered millions of rands linked to overpayments made by the University of Fort Hare (UFH) to student accommodation service providers.
The SIU said three service providers were found to have overcharged the university a combined R3.33 million.
Younus Atcha, trading as Equicent Eastern Cape Developments, overcharged UFH by R302,814.50, while Tshongwane Trust overcharged the university by R2.93 million. Tshongwane Trust has repaid R1.62 million, with R1.67 million, including interest, still outstanding.
Lynton and Harmony, which did not sign an Acknowledgment of Debt, paid R103,829.96 directly into the SIU’s bank account.
The overpayments were uncovered through an analysis of UFH’s financial records and accommodation lease agreements.
The SIU has also referred nine disciplinary cases involving current and former university officials linked to the leasing of student accommodation.
The investigation forms part of a broader SIU probe into UFH, covering procurement, contracting, maladministration and misconduct.
