Letsike urges businesses to create more jobs for young people

Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Mmapaseka Steve Letsike has challenged South African businesses to create more pathways from education and training into employment.

Speaking at Aberdare Cables’ 80th anniversary celebration in Johannesburg, Letsike said industry has a key role to play in tackling youth unemployment and ensuring young people benefit from South Africa’s industrial growth.

She urged companies to expand internships, apprenticeships, learnerships, graduate placements and workplace-based learning, particularly for graduates from TVET colleges.

“These young people need more than certificates. They need workplaces, mentors, practical experience, and their first opportunity to prove what they can do,” Letsike said.

She also encouraged businesses to participate in the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme and work with organisations supporting young people into employment.

Letsike highlighted emerging sectors such as renewable energy, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and automation, saying young South Africans must be equipped to participate in and own businesses within these industries.

“A certificate without an opportunity does not transform a life,” she said.

Letsike called for greater inclusion of young women and persons with disabilities in the economy, saying businesses should measure their legacy not only by what they produce, but by the opportunities they create.
