Limpopo border crackdown nets stolen vehicles and illicit cigarettes

Limpopo police, working with the SANDF and other law-enforcement agencies, have recovered seven suspected stolen vehicles and seized illicit cigarettes worth about R877,679.

The recoveries were made during intensified operations conducted between 13 and 16 August 2026 along key routes and border areas leading towards the Limpopo River and Zimbabwe.

Among the vehicles recovered was a stolen Nissan Navara, which led to the arrest of a 27-year-old Zimbabwean national found hiding in bushes in the Tshamutumbu area. The vehicle had false registration plates and a fake licence disc.

Police also recovered a Toyota Land Cruiser, valued at about R700,000, from the Limpopo River. Other recovered vehicles included a Peugeot Landtrek, Toyota Corolla Cross, Ford Territory and Suzuki sedan.

Illicit cigarettes, including Royal Express and Remington Gold, were found concealed in vehicles suspected of being used for smuggling.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers praised the joint operation, saying authorities would continue targeting criminal syndicates involved in cross-border crime.

“We are intensifying the fight against cross-border crime and closing the routes that criminal syndicates believe they can exploit,” said Scheepers.
