NPA confident in Medicare24 fraud case despite Matlala plea deal collapse

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it remains confident in its case against alleged underworld boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his 16 co-accused in the alleged Medicare24 fraud case, despite the collapse of his plea and sentence agreement.

Matlala withdrew from the agreement after the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria rejected the proposed sentence, resulting in the matter being postponed to 11 September 2026, when he will rejoin his co-accused.

NPA head Advocate Andy Mothibi said the failed plea deal does not weaken the State’s case.

“A plea and sentence agreement is a legally recognised and legally viable strategic mechanism… It is certainly not an indication of the State’s lack of confidence in its case.”

He added: “The IDAC is now focusing on ensuring that the pending trial proceeds without hindrance.”

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said Matlala had voluntarily approached IDAC to propose the plea deal through his attorneys.

He stressed that the prosecution’s case remains strong, saying: “The NPA holds the firm view that his withdrawal will not negatively impact the IDAC’s case… as we believe there is sufficient evidence to sustain the charges.”
